Doin' It Yourself!
Small "Critters"
Edited By Elizabeth M. Lukan, 12/31/02
Buying a microscope was one of the best investments I could have made for the further
enjoyment of this hobby. It has opened up a whole new world of amazing plants and animals.
One single drop of water sampled from within the live sand bed has more life forms in it
than all the large animals in the tank.
I then made a very simple camera attachment by gluing a section of blue PVC pipe, with a diameter just larger than the microscope's eye-piece, to a high-pressure u-PVC fitting. I then glued this into a next-size larger u-PVC fitting, which fits tightly around the 35mm SLR camera's lens. In the near future, I will be playing around with a bellows extension, and a few other DIY projects to enhance the photos.
The following are only a few of the many photos I've taken with this rather crude DIY equipment.

Keeping a Tank Log or Journal #2
Edited By Elizabeth M. Lukan 9/25/02
Keep a journal of your tank. I wish we would have done this from the very beginning. Record when you purchase fish and corals, what your fish tank levels are. Also, record things like when your clownfish started breeding or if you had a problem in your tank how you were able to fix it. This journal will be a great value to you. When asked, you'll be able to say how long you've had certain fish or when exactly you switched your tank over from a fish only tank to a reef tank. You can also keep track of how much a coral has grown in your care or when it's time to change your bulbs. It's fun, informational, and it will also help you trouble shoot your tank.
