Custom Buoyancy Inc. Recalls Overpressure Valves - 7,700 overpressure valves used with buoyancy control systems (both jacket and wing styles) are being voluntarily recalled. The overpressure valve can stick in the open position, posing a drowning hazard to divers. Three reports of the valves sticking open have been received but no injuries have been reported. These overpressure valves can be found on the following brand names: Diving Unlimited International (DUI), International Divers, Ocean Management Systems, Rip Tide and Steam Machines. Valves with date codes from October 2000 to June 2001 are being recalled but valves with an asterisk below the serial number are not. These overpressure valves were sold in the USA from October 2000 to November 2001 for about $590. Stop using the valves immediately and contact the dealer where purchased for a free replacement valve. Following is another comment on Cowries. Never before has an article generated such feedback! The original article, "The Cowry: Add a Little Lustre to Your Tank" by Dale Bennett was featured in the July 2001 (updated 8/24/04) issue with comments by Roger Holt and Jake Pehrson coming in the August 2001 (updated 8/24/04) and October 2001 (updated 8/24/04) issues respectively.
"I have several large cowries which I have enjoyed for several years now. They coexist with my corals & sponges. Given enough algae they seem to thrive."

most famous coral reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is beginning to be
repaired with a little human help. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
has begun restoring the site where the freighter Wellwood grounded on Molasses Reef off

7/2/02 - Sydney, Australia: Australia's Catholic Church signaled
its intention to mobilize its congregation - representing one-quarter of the Australian

Rhode Island are studying the microalgae that produce toxic algae blooms along the East

7/15/02 - Rarotonga, Cook Islands: Conservationists told regional
journalists in Rarotonga that fish laundering and reef destruction has become a major concern

7/25/02 - Florida, US: Researchers will embark on a three week
expedition into the deep water off the U.S. South Atlantic Coast. The research mission,

populations, investigate the potential use of marine resources in human drugs, and research

Fish Separation

Sometimes fish fight and need to be separated for a time or a fish needs to be removed because it's bothering corals etc. We use a hamster ball to separate a "rogue" fish from the other fish and corals temporarily until we can figure out how to remedy the situation.
You simply catch the fish (this is not always simple) and pop it into the ball. The ball will float in the water at the top of your tank and drifts in the current. The fish can see its surroundings, gets water exchange through the slits in the ball and the ball can be opened without releasing the fish in order to feed it. Obviously, this is a temporary hold for fish but it has been a life saver for us many times.
This works great when you buy a fish that you're not sure will be accepted by the other fish. That way, if there's any trouble the new fish can be removed to a safe holding place out of harm's way.
