Sorry for the small issue and it's lateness. There just aren't enough days in the month for me to get all this work done by myself anymore. Hope you enjoy what I did manage to put together for you this month though.

Tank Showcases Needed - There are a few month's still open in 2001! Send an email to fishnchips@mail.com with as much or as little tank information as you want published.

A Good Book
A Hobbyist's Opinion
By Bob Allison 11/19/00
Edited By Elizabeth M. Lukan 6/19/01

What is your favorite reference book?

I have three. The first being Tullock's 'Natural Reef Aquariums', mainly as it has a fairly simple approach to biotypes. I am really a major supporter of the ideas of creating aquariums that reflect one biotype rather than filling a tank with a mish mash of fish/inverts from various origins.

My second choice would be M. S. Paletta's 'The New Marine Aquarium' which has a 'common sense' approach to setting up a an aquarium.

Thirdly, and I know this is a bit long in the tooth, but for a technical as well as 'do it yourself' approach, I guess Martin Moe Jr's 'The Marine Aquarium Reference - Systems & Invertebrates' takes some beating. Can't you guys in the US persuade him to bring it up to date?

To Submit Your Book Review: Send your book review in any format you like to fishnchips@mail.com and I'll publish it in an upcoming issue. Make sure you let me know if I can include your name and email address or if you'd rather go anonymous.

What Will They Think Of Next?

Robotic fish & more featured at Monolith Marine Monsters (m3).
Although the Aquaroids and Mini U-Boot are designed for freshwater use only, they are just too cool to not mention in Fish 'N' Chips. When Eddie at m3 (http://www.marine-monsters.com/ (url dead 10/06/05)) told me about these gadgets, I just had to pass the news along to you. I've always been partial to turtles so that's my favorite, but the details on the jellyfish and nautilus will amaze you. To find out more about Aquaroids and The Mini U-Boot, including pricing, please visit m3 via the link above or go directly to the Aquaroid page at http://www.marine-monsters.com/front/products/aquaroid.html (url dead 10/06/05) or the Mini U-Boot at http://www.marine-monsters.com/front/products/miniuboot.html (url dead 10/06/05).

Chips...er...Tips
Keeping a Tank Log or Journal
By Judy Shaner 6/10/01
Edited By Elizabeth M. Lukan 7/1/01

Tonight was one of those times when the tip I gave the most to people was to "keep a log." In these busy times, it is very easy to forget what you did or did not do on any given day or week. What did you notice about the tank inhabitants last Thursday, for example? You checked the alkalinity a "couple of weeks ago," might actually be a month ago. When a problem arises, a log or journal helps very much to pinpoint where and what the problem stems from. One can also recognize cycles within the tank and its inhabitants from a log.

Actually, I could write a whole page of what a log does, both for the hobbyist and for those of us who must find the answer to their questions or problems. It just took me eight e-mails to find the "something" that caused a bacterial bloom in someone's tank. I kept getting the answer "nothing has changed." Finally, discovered that the person had not topped off the water for a couple of days (?) and then added a gallon of top off to it!! This was in a 30 gallon tank with NO sump - so it was poured in directly to the tank!!!!!

It is a wonder all the fish were not dead!!!

Editor Comments:
The above tip was submitted by Judy Shaner of The Salt Box. Please visit Judy's site at http://www.coralreeftanks.com/ (url dead 10/06/05). My editing was limited to formatting mostly.

To Submit Your Tip: Send your tip via email to fishnchips@mail.com and I'll publish it in an upcoming issue of Fish 'N' Chips. I'll write it up for you or you can do it yourself if you are so inclined. Make sure you let me know if I can include your name and email address or if you'd rather go anonymous.
