Recall of Scuba Buoyancy Compensator Devices - Sheico PKS Inc., of Carlsbad, California (USA), is recalling 10,000 scuba buoyancy compensator devices (BCDs) which are used by divers to maintain neutral buoyancy. The overpressure valve can stick in the open position and present a drowning hazard. There have been no injuries reported. The BCDs were sold under several different brands and models and only certain serial numbers are affected. The BCDs were sold in dive stores and via mail order from September 2000 through March 2001 for between $150 and $450. Stop using the BCDs immediately and return them for a free replacement. For more information, call Sheico at (800) 808-3306 (9am - 5pm ET Monday through Friday) or visit http://www.sherwoodscuba.com/opv (url dead 10/06/05), http://www.genesisscuba.com/opv (url dead 10/06/05), or http://www.diveaeris.com/.

A Good Book
A Hobbyist's Opinion
By Scott A. Martin 11/15/00
Edited By Elizabeth M. Lukan 5/31/01

What is your favorite non-reef marine critter reference book?

Dr. Burgess's Mini-Atlas of Marine Aquarium Fishes
Published by T.F.H publications, catalog #H-1107
ISBN 0-79380-032-3
Approximate cost: $30US (hardback)
Note: Available through Amazon.com

Who wrote it?

Dr. Warren E. Burgess, Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, and Ray Hunziker

Why is it your favorite?

It has photos (1900 of them!) and excellent descriptions of any and every marine fish that a hobbyist is likely to encounter. This is the absolute best reference guide to marine fish I have found, and I own several dozen different books on this topic.

Any other comments?

Additionally, any serious marine aquarist should read these marine aquarium reference books by Martin A. Moe:

  1. The Marine Aquarium Handbook
    ISBN 0-939960-07-9
    Approximate cost: $20 US (paperback)
    Note: Available through Amazon.com

  2. The Marine Aquarium Reference
    ISBN 0-939960-05-2
    Approximate cost: $26US (paperback)
Note: Now out of print; Hard to find, but worth it!

To Submit Your Book Review: Send your book review in any format you like to fishnchips@mail.com and I'll publish it in an upcoming issue. Make sure you let me know if I can include your name and email address or if you'd rather go anonymous.

What's Up @ Reefs UK
By Elizabeth M. Lukan 5/24/01

5/1/01:

AquaticSearch (http://www.aquaticsearch.co.uk/ (url dead 10/06/05)), Reefs UK's sister web site has launched. AquaticSearch is the first site to list every aquatic store in the UK. Every hit to the AquaticSearch site helps Reefs UK, so please check it out.

A new section of the Reefs UK web site called the Picture Gallery has been created so hobbyists can see each other's marine aquariums. Hobbyists can send pictures of their tanks to post@reefsuk.org and they will be uploaded to the Reefs UK web site so others can see your success. Select the "Picture Gallery" under "Marine Aquariums" to find the existing photos. Please keep the photos small in size and send in just 2-3 of your best shots.

Reefs UK is looking for help. Since Reefs UK is non-profit they are always on the look out for free help. They have some plans in the works and are looking for someone to donate some promotional materials such as baseball caps, key rings, t-shirts etc. with the Reefs UK web address on them. They need about 250 total. If you or someone you know can help them out, contact them via email.

To join the ReefsUK Mailing List, send an email to post@reefsuk.org.
To join ReefsUK Chat (Email Discussion Group), visit the ReefsUK Website for instructions.

Editor's Comments:
Information in this section covers the latest happenings at Mark T. Taber's ReefsUK Web Site. Mark has given me permission to publish any information from his mailing list that I feel would be of interest to Fish 'N' Chips subscribers. So, the above, although reworded by me, should be credited to Mark or to Derek Scales who works closely with Mark on the running of ReefsUK. The dates in bold coincide with Mark or Derek's mailings and are provided as a reference.

Chips...er...Tips
Local Shoreline Collecting
By Dr. Chris Nelson 4/26/01
Edited By Elizabeth M. Lukan 5/30/01

My tip... Why not try cold water marines from your local shoreline?

I live in Northern Ireland where it is cold most of the time! So instead of following the tropical marine keepers, I did something different and set up a 6x2x2 native marine aquarium with a 4x15x15 sump containing perlag and foam. I also added a Seaclone protein skimmer.

Local marines are free, equipment is cheaper, running costs are lower (no heat), using local mussels as food is also free and this hobby has minimal environmental impact - all in all a very attractive and easy to maintain aquarium can be established and provides a different talking point!!

Editor's Comments:
Thanks for the tip Dr. Nelson. For those of you interested in pursuing this aspect of our hobby, please do some research before hand and make yourself aware of the local collection laws, if any, so you don't get into any trouble.

To Submit Your Tip: Send your tip via email to fishnchips@mail.com and I'll publish it in an upcoming issue of Fish 'N' Chips. I'll write it up for you or you can do it yourself if you are so inclined. Make sure you let me know if I can include your name and email address or if you'd rather go anonymous.
